The Heart & Soul of Coffee
is Now Available!

The Heart and Soul of Coffee is a book sharing my passion for coffee with you. I know that millions of people share this affection with me. It is not just a beverage, “The bonds that hold us together are strengthened over coffee.” – The Heart & Soul of Coffee.

The book celebrates coffee and café culture. It is one of the few places where people can meet and connect. The connection that coffee and cafes bring us has been going on for hundreds of years, “It is a birthplace of ideas and a place where people come to congregate and create. Cafés bring us together.” – The Heart & Soul of Coffee.

In this vein, I want to share my coffee world with you. There is a humanity in the café that still exists. I find baristas and staff highly friendly. Most people work with coffee because they love it and they love working with people. Even though coffee gives us the physical pleasure we enjoy, in The Heart & Soul of Coffee, coffee is also a metaphor for life and the appreciation for the simple things, that if recognized can bring us joy.

The Final Sip 8/8/24

I have just had that last sip of the day. It’s a hold out for my earlier coffee. I get more bang for the buck if I save that last sip for a couple hours later. I drink it and absorb every last drop of it. And as it goes in my mouth, through the back of my throat and down into my body, I feel a wave of beauty and excitement. Then I start dreaming of tomorrow.

Latte art has permeated café culture. Many delicious lattes are now punctuated with a rosetta, swan or heart. It is only for a few moments that the temporal showpiece floats atop your porcelain, ceramic, or cardboard cup: a beauty that mimics life’s impermanence. Latte art is the evening flambe, the star on the tree, the cherry on top.

The final touches of the latte art come at the long end of a magical chain of events. The planet gifts us coffee naturally. Farmers have added their own techniques of cultivation to produce the highest quality coffee bean possible. Once the beans are handpicked (a task modern technology does not have an invention for), the fruit is washed, dried, and shipped. The roaster takes it from there. Much like a great movie in the editing room, a great bean can easily be destroyed by a bad roast.

The beans are finally left in the hands of the baristas. They too bring something to the table. The good ones calibrate first thing in the morning and stay on the machine throughout the day. Once everything is in proper working order, a savory latte can be prepared and served. Then light the candle; hit the switch; steam the milk and lay it down softly and rhythmically.

A latte art stamp atop of your espresso drink rarely disappoints. The process is a pleasure to watch and if the café offers me a vantage point to check out the barista in action I always observe. It is fascinating to see the heated milk ooze out of the pitcher and merge with the espresso, magically lying on top to form something exquisite. Latte art has caught on and is no longer rare, but that doesn’t mean it is any less beautiful.

Come for the ice cream stay for the coffee.

You want coffee but your mate wants ice cream. No problem. Head over to one of the numerous J.P. Licks in and around the Boston area. Known predominantly as an ice cream parlor, this diamond in the rough brews a solid cup of coffee along with a lovely espresso profile. I had a great latté.

Over 20 years ago the Boston chain Coffee Connection was bought out by the behemoth Starbucks. J.P. Licks saw this as an opportunity to fill the void and started roasting their own coffee. Roasted on premises in Jamaica Plain, they use Fair Trade and Organic Certified. Besides ice cream and coffee, you can have a breakfast sandwich, croissant, cookie or other baked good. Next time you pass this hidden gem, which is J.P. Licks, step inside for a lick and sip.
